The accident reportedly occurred when an SUV veered off the street, struck the two victims, and drove into a liquor store. The accident occurred around 10:00 Tuesday morning at the intersection of Northwest 28th Street and Northwest 7th Avenue in the Allapattah neighborhood of Miami. Northwest 7th Street is a four-lane street with a turning lane in its center. NW 28th Street is a simple two-lane street with two yellow lines separating the opposing lanes.

According to reports, the Dodge Durango was northbound on Northwest 7th Avenue when its driver lost control and veered off the street. The SUV allegedly struck two pedestrians who were standing at a serving window at Laguna Seafood Restaurant. The SUV continued forward and drove into a liquor store, sources say. Surveillance footage shows that a clerk behind the register of the liquor store narrowly avoided injury.

Paramedics pronounced one of the pedestrians dead at the scene. The other pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was taken to the Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of the driver’s injuries have not been released, although it appears as though the driver was conscious after the accident.

A Miami Fire Rescue spokesperson commented on the accident afterwards, saying, “What we did find when the vehicle struck the liquor store that, obviously, there are several bottles that are broken as a result, so you have to smell the alcohol all inside the liquor store but also that’s spilling outside as well. The driver of the vehicle, just so you know, when we arrived, sounded very combative, very confused, which is normal when you have some type of possible head injury as a result of the incident.” Police have not yet determined whether the driver of the SUV was under the influence of alcohol or an illicit substance at the time of the crash.
