Marc Antolin Vega of Hollywood, Florida was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly kept his girlfriend at his home for three days against her will, news sources report. Vega, 33, is accused of physically assaulting the victim during that time. In addition, Vega allegedly fled the police following his arrest. He was later apprehended and booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of criminal mischief, inflicting bodily harm upon or terrorizing the victim, escape and kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and felony battery resulting in great bodily harm. He was denied bond. It is not yet known whether he has retained an attorney.
According to reports, the incident began on Saturday at Vega’s home in Hollywood. The victim later told police that Vega assaulted her various times during a forced three-day stay at Vega’s home. The couple’s infant was also trapped at the home, sources say. At one point the victim says she tried to leave the home, but Vega grabbed her and strangled her until she passed out. Reports say he also assaulted the victim with a chair, a plunger, and a milk crate, as well as with his fists and feet. Vega allegedly confiscated the victim’s cellphone to stop her from calling for help.
The abuse came to a halt on Tuesday when Vega and the victim took their fever-ridden infant child to the Pediatric Associates on Sheridan Street. Unbeknownst to Vega, the victim had managed to hide a cell phone in her underwear. Vega went into the clinic with the baby while the victim remained in the parking lot. According to reports, the victim used the hidden cellphone to call the police. “I can’t do this anymore,” the victim said during a call with police.
Police arrived at the clinic and placed Vega under arrest. The arresting officer left Vega unattended in his cruiser, in both feet and hand restraints, while he interviewed the victim inside the clinic, reports say. Vega was reportedly able to escape both his restraints and the police cruiser, and when the officer came back outside, Vega was nowhere to be found. “For all we know, [some suspects] practice this,” a police spokesperson said. “We get a lot of prisoners who can move their handcuffs to the front. They’re limber. And that’s how he was able to free himself.”
Fifty officers across multiple agencies, armed with search dogs and a police helicopter, began searching the area for Vega. After a three-hour search, an officer spotted Vega walking in front of a Hollywood police station and placed him under arrest.
While officers were searching for Vega, Hollywood paramedics took the victim to the Memorial Regional Hospital. According to reports, she sustained large bruises on her legs and arms, as well as a black eye. She may have sustained injuries to her stomach, ribs, and hips as well. It is unclear whose custody the child was left in while the mother is in the hospital.
