Israel Guadalupe of Davie, Florida Arrested for Child Abuse and Arson

Israel Guadalupe of Davie, Florida was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly set his ex-girlfriend’s car on fire, news sources report. Guadalupe’s 14-year-old son reportedly sustained injury in the blaze. Guadalupe, 47, was booked into the Broward County Jail on charges of second-degree arson and child abuse. His bail bond was set at $75,000, and it is not yet known whether it has been posted. It is currently unclear whether he has obtained a criminal defense lawyer..

According to reports, Guadalupe and Szeto dated up until recently, when Szeto ended the relationship via text message. Upset, Guadalupe reportedly made plans to set Szeto’s 2011 Ford Fusion on fire. At around 1:00 on Tuesday morning, Guadalupe reportedly got his son out of bed and traveled to Szeto’s home near the 12000 block of Southwest Eighth Court. A surveillance camera near the home reportedly captured images of Guadalupe’s white Chrysler 200 heading towards Szeto’s home.

Guadalupe appears to have doused Szeto’s car in gasoline before fleeing the scene with his son in tow. According to reports, the son somehow burned his left shin during the incident. A nearby neighbor reportedly heard a “boom” and witnessed Guadalupe and the son fleeing the scene on foot. The neighbor shouted to Guadalupe, asking what had caused the explosion. “I don’t know what happened,” Guadalupe reportedly answered as he continued to flee the scene.

Another witness said he saw a car speed away from Szeto’s home; around 15 minutes later, that witness reportedly heard the explosion and went outside, which is when he saw the Szeto’s vehicle engulfed in flames. Fire rescue teams arrived on the scene shortly after and extinguished the fire. Reports say Szeto’s car was burned beyond repair.

Detectives attempted but failed to contact Guadalupe by phone following the incident. The detectives went to Guadalupe’s home and discovered that he was there, but he allegedly would not come outside to talk. The detectives attained a search warrant and entered the home, only to discover that Guadalupe escaped through a window sometime earlier. Guadalupe’s son was at home, however, and confessed that his father had torched Szeto’s car. The detectives reportedly noticed a burn to the child’s left shin that appeared to be inflamed and peeling. The child said he had sustained the wound at the scene of the crime. Paramedics treated Guadalupe’s son at the home.

Detectives later arrested and questioned Guadalupe. While in police custody, Guadalupe allegedly said to his son, “Why did you tell them you got burned? You should have told them you did that with a pressure cleaner.” Reports say Guadalupe failed to seek medical attention for his son’s wound, which is why he was charged with child abuse. It is not clear who is watching the child while Guadalupe is in police custody.

It is unclear whether Guadalupe, who does not appear to have been injured in the fire, actually admitted to setting it. A witness later identified Guadalupe as being one of the men fleeing the scene following the arson.
