Jeffery Pinder of Boca Raton, Florida was arrested Sunday for fleeing the scene of three consecutive accidents while driving under the influence of cocaine, reports indicate. One of the accidents reportedly left victim Sheila Fink with permanent disabilities. Pinder, 42, was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence. He was later released on his own recognizance. It is unclear whether Pinder has hired a defense attorney.
According to reports, all of the accidents took place in one day in April 2012. Pinder was behind the wheel of his 2006 gray Toyota pickup truck on Military Trail when the first accident occurred. The details regarding the first crash or whether anyone else was involved are unknown; however, Pinder allegedly left the scene of the first accident and continued along Military Trail. Fink was about to make her way across a cross walk on Military Trail near Lake Worth Road when Pinder’s truck struck her. Pinder continued along Military Trail after hitting the woman, sources say.
Paramedics arrived and found Fink lying on the sidewalk; she was bleeding from the head as rescue crews rushed her to a nearby hospital, reports say. Meanwhile, Pinder headed onto Lake Worth Road and was involved in another accident near the intersection of Sherwood Forest Boulevard. Following that accident, Pinder fled the scene on foot, sources say. Officers were able to track him down and place him under arrest. He was later transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries. A blood sample taken at the hospital came back positive for cocaine, reports say.
According to reports, Fink sustained irreparable damage to one of her eyes, leaving her partially blind. She also suffered some paralysis and now has problems with her memory, sources say. It is unclear whether she will sue Fink for damages. It is also unclear whether there were any other victims in Pinder’s alleged hit-and-run spree.
In other news, Roshan Bhattarai was arrested in Coral Springs Monday after he allegedly raped a woman he met online, press sources indicate. Police have not publicly identified the victim. Bhattarai, 31, was booked into police custody on charges of sexual battery. His bail bond was set at $25,000. It is unclear whether he has hired legal representation.
Reports say Bhattarai is from Irving, Texas. According to the victim, she and Bhattarai met on a social networking site and agreed to have dinner. On Sunday, the two met at Miller’s Ale House on North University Drive in Coral Springs. After eating dinner, the victim reportedly joined Bhattarai in his car to go get ice cream; however, the victim says Bhattarai drove her to a remote location in the city, bound her hands with duct tape, and sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, Bhattarai reportedly dropped the woman back off at the tavern.
Detectives visited the rape scene after learning of the incident and found a used condom, reports say. Officers arrested Bhattarai around 3:00 Monday morning in the block of North University Drive in Tamarac. It is unclear whether he made a statement regarding the allegations following his arrest.
