James Leclerc of Lighthouse Point, Florida was arrested Thursday after he allegedly assaulted his friend during an argument about Leclerc’s girlfriend, news sources report. Leclerc, 26, was booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of domestic battery following the alleged assault. It is unclear whether he has qualified for bail bond. It is also unclear whether Leclerc has hired an attorney to assist him with his case.
According to reports, Leclerc lives with his pregnant fiancée, Nicole Walsh, in an apartment in Lighthouse Point. The incident began after one of Leclerc’s friends allegedly sent intimate text messages to Walsh. Leclerc brought the victim back to his apartment for a discussion with Walsh, sources allege. Reports say the men woke Walsh up to discuss the issue. At some point, Leclerc reportedly attacked his friend. After the attack Walsh said she would pack her bags and leave the apartment, but Leclerc would not let Walsh or the friend exit the building, a police report purportedly says.
Police arrived to the scene and Leclerc reportedly resisted arrest; officers purportedly had to use a Taser to subdue Leclerc and take him into custody. During a court hearing, Walsh reportedly said she was not intimately involved with the friend.
Lover’s quarrels are fairly common in South Florida. According to jail records, 11 Broward County residents were arrested on Valentine’s Day on charges ranging from assault to domestic battery. A spokesperson from a Broward County Women in Distress center said they received 35 calls during the Thursday holiday. “There is always a pressure to have a perfect day on holidays, including Valentine’s Day, and especially on Christmas and New Year’s Eve,” the president of the Broward County Women in Distress center said. “Unfortunately, a lot of these things become an everyday thing.”
In another Broward County domestic incident on Thursday, Joshua Morales of Sunrise was accused of assaulting his girlfriend following a verbal argument, reports say. Morales, 22, was booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of domestic battery. It is unclear whether qualified for bail or hired legal representation.
According to reports, Morales and his girlfriend have a child together, though it is not clear how long they have been involved. The incident began on Thursday when Morales and his girlfriend got into a verbal confrontation. The victim says Morales turned violent, struck her in the face three times, and dragged her across a floor. At least two people reportedly witnessed the attack. Police responded to the scene and placed Morales under arrest. Morales reportedly admitted to dragging the victim, but said he did not strike her.
