The 42-year-old worker, who was not identified by name in reports, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries following the accident. Reports say the incident occurred around 4:30 Friday afternoon at the Viera Condominiums worksite on American Express Way. The victim is a Banner Supply employee and was working with the sheetrock, a building material made of gypsum and heavy cardboard, sources say. “He was up on the fifth floor pushing one of those Sheetrock carts when it tipped over,” a fire-rescue spokesperson said. “It dumped an estimated 1,500 pounds of Sheetrock on top of him [and] caught his lower body.” Authorities are not yet sure what caused the colossal cart to tip over. Unsafe working conditions or a manufacturing defect are both possibilities.
Rescue crews arrived on the scene and helped co-workers remove the man from the under the sheetrock. Paramedics rushed him to the Broward Health Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
