Jennalin M. Garcia-Calle was arrested in Davie, Florida Thursday after she allegedly had sex with a 16-year-old boy, news sources report. Calle, 28, works for a high school in Piscataway, NJ, where the alleged sexual encounter occurred. She was booked into police custody on charges of second-degree sexual assault and child abuse and is being held without bail. It is currently unclear whether she has retained a criminal defense attorney.
Reports say Calle has been teaching math at Plainfield High School in Piscataway, New Jersey since 2008. She received her teaching degree at Kean University, sources indicate. It is unclear whether the high school released a statement regarding the allegations or what punitive measure it will take against Calle.
Detectives first learned of the sexual misconduct when one of Calle’s 16-year-old students told a relative that he and Calle were in a sexual relationship. According to detectives, Calle had sex with the 16-year-old student inside her classroom during school hours. “What made this particularly unusual is that they actually had sex in school, in her classroom,” a county spokesperson said. “Evidently they blocked the windows and locked the door.” The sexual encounter appears to be consensual. An investigation is ongoing and it is unclear whether there was only once incident of sexual misconduct, or if more victims will come forward.
The victim’s relatives reported the abuse to police and, reports say, Calle fled to Davie, Florida when she found out. The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force received a tip regarding Calle’s whereabouts and located her within the Recovery Institute of South Florida, where she was staying. According to reports, the Recovery Institute of South Florida helps patients overcome drug addictions. Sources did not say whether Calle actually has a drug problem.
When police questioned Calle, she said she had come to Davie to seek help. It is not currently known whether Calle admitted or denied the allegations of sexual abuse or if she made a statement regarding her arrest. It is also unclear whether she owns or rents a home in South Florida. Reports indicate she may appear in an extradition courtroom on Monday.
In other news, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Fink of Haines City is wanted for the theft of 166 manhole covers. Fink, 40, is accused of stealing the manhole covers with the intent to sell them for scrap metal. Fink remains on the lam and is wanted on charges of grand theft, dealing in stolen property, and giving false verification to a secondhand metal dealer.
Reports say the alleged theft occurred sometime in mid-January. Fink reportedly stole the manhole covers off Lake Marion Creak Road and some of its side roads. The Toho Water Authority learned of the theft sometime later and contacted police. According to a police report, Fink attempted to sell the covers as scrap metal at a metal dealer. It is currently unclear if that is how officers learned that Fink was the culprit. It is also unclear whether police recovered the covers, which have an estimated value of $22,000.
