A 12-year-old Coconut Creek, Florida girl was injured on Tuesday when a vehicle struck her as she rode her bicycle, reports indicate. The girl was not identified in reports; after the crash she was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center, where her condition was listed as stable. The driver was also left unidentified in reports and does not appear to have been injured. An investigation into the collision is ongoing. It is not yet known what caused the accident or whether charges will be filed against the driver.
Reports say the accident occurred around 8:00 Tuesday morning on Copan Road, near the intersection of Lyons Road.. The intersection is a high-traffic area with multiple lanes. The exact details of the collision, including the make and model of the vehicle and the speed at which it was traveling, are not yet known. Due to the time, it is likely that the girl was biking to school when she was struck. It is not clear what school she attends.
Paramedics arrived on scene afterwards and rushed the girl to the Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors said her condition was stable.
The Coconut Creek Police Department says they are looking into the accident. The driver remained on the scene following the crash and is cooperating with authorities. It is unclear what conditions led to the incident or if the driver was at fault.
In other accident-related news, Xiomara Martinez accidentally drove her car into her own daycare center on Monday, a report says. None of the nine children inside the daycare were injured in the accident. Martinez also escaped without injury. As of now, it is unclear whether the building is still structurally stable.
Reports say the accident occurred at around 9:00 Tuesday morning outside Olga’s Pre-School & Day Care, located off Southwest 107th Avenue near Miller Road. Martinez was inside her vehicle and in the process of parking when a nearby driver reportedly honked. Martinez, startled, mistakenly pressed down on her gas pedal instead of her brake, sending her vehicle into the front of the daycare building.
Police responded to the scene following the accident. Reports say nine children were in the daycare when the accident occurred. Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash. “It sounded like an explosion,” one witness, who rushed to the scene following the collision, said afterwards. “At first, I couldn’t see anything because everything was covered in a white cloud of smoke…[the children] looked scared,” he said. “They were crying, all of them.”
Reports say the witness took the children to a nearby shop. “The first thing we did was put the Nickelodeon Channel on and they were there watching it,” he said. “They were crying because they were in shock of what happened but other than that, they were good.”
It is unclear whether officers will cite Martinez for the crash or how the accident will affect the overall operations of her daycare. Martinez does not appear to have made a public statement regarding the accident.
