Boca Raton, Florida: Three people were injured and the northbound lanes of US 441 were shut down for nearly four hours Tuesday after a two-vehicle accident, news sources say. The injured parties have not been publicly identified. Two of them were taken to Delray Medical Center’s trauma unit, while the third victim was rushed to Bethesda Hospital East. Their conditions were not available Tuesday. It is unclear what circumstances led to the violent accident. It is also not yet known whether any of the drivers will file for damages.
The crash reportedly occurred at around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of US 441 and Boca Woods Lane, just south of Glades Road. When Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived on the scene, they found two damaged vehicles. One was a black Chevy Camaro with extensive damage to its left side, which was stopped in the median of US 441, sources say. The second vehicle was a gray Lexus SUV with damage to its front, which was in the center of the intersection. Paramedics rushed one of the accident victims to the Bethesda Hospital East, and another two victims to the Delray Medical Center’s trauma unit; their conditions were not made public.
A woman on the scene explained the dangers of the intersection to reporters. If a driver is heading northbound on US 441 and turns left onto Boca Woods Lane at the intersection, she says, visibility is temporarily cut off for drivers turning onto North Central Park Boulevard. As a result, “Traffic accidents happen here all the time,” she told reporters. It remains to be seen whether the city will be facing any legal action for the reportedly unsafe intersection, or whether they will take steps to make the intersection safer.
In other accident-related news, a Miami police officer was injured Tuesday in a crash with a truck, news sources say. The officer was not identified in reports; he was taken to the Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he is reportedly in stable condition. The driver of the truck was identified only as an undocumented immigrant and was arrested on charges of driving without a license.
Reports say the accident occurred on Tuesday morning. The officer was on duty, escorting a funeral procession while on his motorcycle. As the officer traveled southbound near the intersection of Southwest 32nd Street and 113th Court, reports say he attempted to pass a truck driven by the undocumented immigrant. As the officer made his pass, the truck attempted a turn onto Concord Park and the officer collided with the left side of the truck. Is it not known whether the driver of the truck was in the proper lane to make a left turn.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed the officer to the Kendall Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition was not immediately available; however, reports say he is in stable condition. It is unclear whether the driver of the truck was injured. Reports say he was taken into police custody for driving without a license.
