An 8-year-old Lauderhill, Florida by died Saturday after he wandered into the path of a car outside of his home, reports indicate. The child was taken to the Broward General Hospital with critical injuries following the crash; he was pronounced dead shortly after. At the time, the boy was under the supervision of a teenage babysitter, sources say. The driver of the car was identified only as a 20-year-old woman. An investigation into the crash is ongoing; so far, criminal charges have not been filed against the driver or the babysitter. It remains to be seen whether the boy’s parents will file for damages.

Reports say the accident occurred sometime Saturday night while the child was in the care of a babysitter, who has not been publicly identified. An exact time was not specified by public reports. It is not clear how long the babysitter had been watching the boy before he slipped outside and walked onto Northwest 27th Court Street, a road near the home. The driver, who was going down the road, either did not see the child or was unable to stop in time. It was nighttime, so limited visibility may have well played a role in the accident. Investigators say she remained on the scene and complied with police during an initial investigation. As of now, it is not clear whether police suspect the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or was speeding at the time of the accident.

Paramedics arrived to the accident site and rushed the child to the nearby Broward General Hospital where doctors later pronounced him dead of his serious injuries. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. So far, it is not yet known whether the driver will face charges or if the babysitter will be found at fault in any way.

Sadly, this child was not the only one to die after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday. Marc Smart, 36, of Dania, Florida was identified as the driver. He was arrested following the incident for allegedly fleeing the scene. It is unclear whether speed or alcohol played a role in the accident. An investigation is ongoing.

Reports say the accident occurred at around 2:00 Saturday morning along a portion of State Road 7 in Hollywood. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when an oncoming blue Jeep Cherokee struck him. It is not clear whether the victim was crossing at a crosswalk. Following the collision, the vehicle reportedly left the scene; however, a witness followed the car and reported the accident to the police.

Paramedics arrived on the scene afterwards and rushed the victim to the Memorial Regional Hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead of his injuries. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. So far, Smart has not been charged with anything other than fleeing the scene of an accident.
