Three Injured in Pompano Beach, Florida Collision

Three people were injured in a Pompano Beach, Florida collision Sunday involving an SUV and a motorcycle, news sources indicate. Police have not yet released the names of those injured out of respect for their families. One was identified as the driver of a motorcycle, one the driver of the SUV, and the other a passenger of the SUV. All three of victims were taken to the Broward Health North hospital for treatment following the collision; the driver of the motorcycle was listed in critical condition, while the SUV’s former occupants sustained non-life threating injuries.

Reports say the accident occurred sometime Sunday afternoon as both vehicles traveled north along Powerline Road. According to eyewitness testimony, the driver of the motorcycle, a blue Yamaha, was moving along the roadway at dangerous speeds, weaving in and out of traffic. At some point, the motorcyclist collided with the right side of a silver Chevy Equinox. The collision occurred a short distance away from the intersection of Northwest 33 Street.

Emergency response teams rushed the driver of the motorcycle and a passenger of the SUV to the Broward Health North hospital. The motorcyclist had to be taken to a trauma center for his injuries; reports say he was not wearing a helmet during the crash, though it is not clear if he suffered from head injuries. The driver of the SUV sustained only minor injuries, but was escorted to Broward Health North hospital nonetheless for precautionary purposes.

In more accident-related news out of Pompano Beach, Mitchell Striggles was injured and his passenger Gerva Dwight McKaskill Jr. killed in an accident on Sunday, reports indicate. Striggles sustained minor injuries in the crash; it is unclear whether he received medical attention. McKaskill, tragically, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Reports say the collision occurred around 1:00 A.M. on Sunday as Striggles’ 2002 Chrysler Concorde traveled northbound along Interstate 95. At some point Striggles lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons. The SUV veered off the roadway, spun, then collided a street light shaft. According to reports, the SUV’s passenger door collided with the light pole. McKaskill, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was seated in the passenger seat. Striggles sustained minor injuries, though it is not clear whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. They have not yet ascertained whether speed or alcohol consumption may have contributed to the crash. Investigators issued a statement asking witnesses to come forward.

Broward County is one of Florida’s top ranking counties for motor vehicle crashes. Records show that in 2010, there were 26,233 crashes in the county. Those accidents were to blame for 179 fatalities that year. Unfortunately, a large percentage of these accidents may have been preventable: for the past five years, DUI drivers accounted for an average of 62 roadway fatalities in Broward County. Drunk drivers caused an estimated 1,424 accidents in 2010 alone. Because of this, drivers are encouraged to make arrangements when they plan on drinking during an outing, such as taking a cab or appointing a designated driver.
