Palm Beach County Officer and Five Others Injured in West Palm Beach, Florida Car Crash

Six people were injured in a multiple vehicle traffic accident in West Palm Beach, Florida Thursday near an intersection of Pike Road and Southern Boulevard, news sources indicate. The names of those injured have not yet been released, but reports say one of the victims was a Palm Beach County School District Officer.

Reports say the accident occurred around 4:00 Thursday evening near the Florida Turnpike around the intersection of Pike Road and Southern Boulevard. The exact details of the case remain unclear, but reports say the accident involved six different vehicles. A Palm Beach County School District Officer was one of the drivers, reports say. He was driving in his official vehicle when an unidentified driver struck him from behind for reasons that have yet to be determined.

According to reports, paramedics took four of the victims to the Palms West Hospital located in Loxahatchee and one to the Wellington Regional Medical Center. A sixth victim declined treatment. Police shut down the portion of the road where the accident occurred for over an hour as they cleared the debris and conducted an initial investigation.

On Saturday, another officer was involved in accident Highlands County. Cory Dale Tomblin, a Highlands County Sheriff’s deputy, reportedly struck and killed a pedestrian along U.S. 27, reports indicate. The victim, identified as Sherri L Stewart, 48, was pronounced dead at the Lee Memorial Hospital.

Reports say the accident occurred around 10:00 Saturday evening as Tomblin, 24, traveled along U.S. 27, outside of Mirror Lake Drive. Stewart walked across the lanes and into the path of Tomblin’s 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, sources say. Tomblin swerved to miss Stewart, reports indicate, but instead the side of his vehicle collided with her. Paramedics rushed her to the Lee Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Additional tragic news was reported out of Lithia, Florida Wednesday when Magali Castaldi of Lithia collided with Gary Cornthwait’s, also of Lithia near State Road 62. Castaldi , 31, was pronounced dead at the scene. Cornthwait escaped without injury. Reports say the accident occurred on Country Road 39 near State Road 62. Castaldi was driving southbound in a 2012 Honda Civic when she attempted to turn onto State Road 62. Her vehicle then crossed paths with Cornthwait’s 1994 International truck. Cornthwait attempted to swerve and miss Castaldi but she struck him head on, reports say. Cornthwait did not sustain injury; Castaldi, however, dead at the scene.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, more that 75% of all roadway accidents are caused by driver error. On Thursday, the FHP announced an initiative to take down reckless drivers. “What they are going to be looking for is aggressive driving behaviors by large truck drivers and car drivers,” a spokesperson from the FHP said.

The FHP dubbed the initiative “Ticketing Aggressive Trucks and Cars.” The initiative will start in Northern Florida, in places like Jacksonville, and then move south. The campaign will begin presently, according to the FHP, and hopefully will have quantifiable results.
