Child Hit by Car in West Palm Beach, Florida

A child was struck by a car in West Palm Beach, Florida near Purdy Lane on Monday, news sources indicate. The unidentified victim was air-rushed to the Delray Medical Center in Florida following the crash. The child’s condition was not immediately known, but his or her injuries are likely not life-threatening. It is unclear whether the driver of the vehicle, who has not been publicly identified, was at fault. An investigation is ongoing; so far, no criminal charges have been filed.

Reports say the accident occurred around 6:30 Monday evening along Purdy Lane and Sherwood Forest Boulevard. The child was apparently in the street when the collision occurred. It is not known whether the child, whose gender and age are not publicly known, was crossing at a crosswalk or was being supervised by an adult. Reports were also unable to say whether the driver is being held accountable, although no charges have been filed as of press time. Paramedics arrived on the scene and air-rushed the child via the Trauma Hawk helicopter to the Delray Medical Center. His or her present condition is not known.

Unfortunately, some car accidents are deadly. Derrick Lewis was killed Monday in a Lauderhill, Florida accident when he was struck by an oncoming motorist while riding his bicycle, reports indicate. Lewis, 49, was rushed to the Broward Health Medical Center with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead only a few moments later. The driver was not publicly identified; he reportedly drove away from the accident, only to be pulled over a few blocks away. An investigation into the crash is ongoing and no criminal charges have yet been filed.

Reports say the accident occurred sometime Monday as the bicyclist headed east on the 1800 block of Northwest 31st Avenue. At some point, Lewis attempted to cross the road’s center lane and was struck by a truck. The driver, who reports did not identify, did not stop at the scene of the accident. Police pulled him over several blocks from the accident site.

Meanwhile, paramedics arrived at the scene of the crash and rushed Lewis to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, reports say. An investigation into the crash is ongoing and it is not yet certain whether criminal charges will be filed against the driver.

Accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists can be some of the deadliest, records show. When a driver fails to stop or veers into a person, who has little to no protection from the collision as compared to a person in a vehicle, the results can be devastating. Records show 549 bicyclists were injured and five were killed in crashes in Broward County in 2010, while 968 pedestrians were injured and 53 were killed that same year. In neighboring Palm Beach County, 364 bicyclists were injured and four were killed in 2010. There were also 550 reports of pedestrians being injured in roadway accidents; 21 pedestrians died as a result of those crashes. Pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to pay special attention to their surroundings when near traffic in order to avoid these kinds of situations.
