Accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists can be some of the deadliest, records show. When a driver fails to stop or veers into a person, who has little to no protection from the collision as compared to a person in a vehicle, the results can be devastating. Records show 549 bicyclists were injured and five were killed in crashes in Broward County in 2010, while 968 pedestrians were injured and 53 were killed that same year. In neighboring Palm Beach County, 364 bicyclists were injured and four were killed in 2010. There were also 550 reports of pedestrians being injured in roadway accidents; 21 pedestrians died as a result of those crashes. Pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to pay special attention to their surroundings when near traffic in order to avoid these kinds of situations.
