Jorim Athanaze of Broward County, Florida was arrested Tuesday after a girl claimed he molested her in 2010 when she was six years old, news sources indicate. Athanaze has since admitted to molesting two other children, reports say, and detectives believe there may be more victims. Athanaze, 20, was taken into police custody on one charge of lewd or lascivious molestation. He has since been released under the stipulation that he wear a GPS ankle device. It is not yet known whether he has retained a private criminal defense lawyer.
Reports say the alleged molestation occurred in 2010 at Athanaze’s mother’s home. The mother, who public reports did not identify, would often babysit the six-year-old victim. The victim alleges that while she was at the home, Athanaze removed some of her clothing and had sexual contact with her on more than a few occasions. Reports indicate Athanaze’s mother was unaware of the abuse at the time, but later turned to police when she had learned of the purported molestation.
Detectives interviewed Athanaze and he admitted to knowing the victim; however, he denied having had lewd contact with her. Athanaze did reportedly confess to having sexual contact with two other children, both purportedly under the age of 12, reports say. That purported abuse occurred when Athanaze was an adolescent himself, sources indicate. Additional charges may surface as detectives investigate those claims. Detectives also say there is reason to believe that there may be additional victims.
In other news, a police officer in Aventura, Florida is recovering from a knee injury after Jeremy Kaiser, also of Aventura, Florida, allegedly attacked him . Kaiser, 43, was booked into a Miami-Dade County Jail on multiple charges, including battery on a police officer, resisting arrest with violence, and theft of a firearm. His bail bond was set at $10,000. It is unclear whether he has hired legal representation.
Reports say the incident occurred at the Aventura Commons Shopping Center sometime Thursday evening. The Aventura officer was making his rounds in the vicinity when he received a call about a man behaving oddly at a Whole Foods Market. The officer responded to the scene and was confronted by a purportedly upset Kaiser. Reports say Kaiser was “yelling and waving balled fists” in the officer’s direction.
A nearby witness and off-duty firefighter reported that Kaiser grow more upset. The officer apparently chose to fire a taser at Kaiser to subdue him; however, the witness said the taser failed to stop Kaiser, who pounced on the officer. Kaiser then allegedly started beating the police officer in an attempt to get the officer’s firearm.
The off-duty firefighter sprang into action and pulled Kaiser away from the officer, who was apparently shouting, “he’s trying to grab my gun!” The firefighter was able to restrain Kaiser until backup arrived. The police officer is now recovering at his home, waiting for his knee to heal. He thanked the off-duty firefighter and credited him with saving his life.
