Palm Beach, Florida Driver Arrested for DUI After Crashing Into Train

An unnamed Palm Beach, Florida driver was arrested today after the driver allegedly crashed into a moving freight train, according to local news reports. The driver, whose name and age have not been released, was booked into Palm Beach County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, sources indicate. It remains unclear whether this person has qualified for bail bond or hired a private criminal defense attorney.

According to news reports, the driver of the unidentified vehicle had two passengers and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The car accident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. at the railroad crossing on Gardenia Avenue in West Palm Beach. The driver apparently failed to stop for a freight train and crashed into the train’s side. At least one of the car’s occupants was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was propelled from the vehicle. The other was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted by emergency officials.

The driver, who was not hurt in the collision, allegedly fled the scene on foot. He was later apprehended by Palm Beach officials and arrested in connection to the car accident. It is not clear whether he was given a breathalyzer or other sobriety test before his arrest.

Both of the car’s passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment following the crash. The man who was ejected during the crash was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, while it is not clear where the other person was taken. The conditions of the victims are not known. It does not appear as though any of the occupants of the train were injured. The financial repercussions of the crash also remain unannounced.

Unfortunately, this driver’s arrest was not the only DUI arrest in South Florida this week. Last Sunday, 38-year-old Jose Mariano Carrasco was arrested for driving over 100 miles per hour going the wrong way on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Florida. Carrasco was arrested on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding police, drug possession, and resisting arrest without violence. It is not clear whether was granted bail or whether he has retained an attorney.

According to press reports, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Sunday. Carrasco, who is from Miami, was allegedly driving down Interstate 75 at over 100 miles per hour in a 1998 Honda SUV, incited calls to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies ended up placing spikes in the road near State Road 29, popping the vehicle’s tires.

When Carrasco pulled over, he allegedly smelled of alcohol and could not speak properly. He allegedly told police officers that he did not recall driving the wrong way. A search of Carrasco’s car allegedly uncovered unidentified pills, three packets of cocaine, and an unspecified amount of marijuana. It is not clear from public reports whether Carrasco was under the influence of any of these substances at the time of his arrest. He does not appear to have commented publicly on the allegations.
