Derek Zugel of Port St. Lucie, Florida Critically Injured in Crash with Deandre Katkavich

Derek Zugel of Port St. Lucie, Florida was critically injured after Deandre Katkavich rear-ended his motorcycle, according to local news reports. Zugel, 29, was transported to Lawnwood Medical Center with critical injuries following the crash; an update on his condition is not immediately available. No criminal charges have been filed, but an investigation into the collision is underway. It is not clear whether authorities suspect that alcohol may have played a factor in the accident.

News reports indicate that the combination car and motorcycle crash occurred at approximately 2:30 in the morning on Saturday on US-1 near La Buona Vita Drive in Port St. Lucie. Zugal was headed southbound on his 2010 Cixi JT when Katkavich allegedly rear-ended him in is 2009 Toyota Solara. Zugal was knocked from the outside lane where he had been driving onto the west shoulder, while the Solara ended up ajar in the outside lane.

Zugal, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was immediately taken to the hospital. It is not clear what kind of injuries he incurred. Katkavich and his passenger, 21-year-old Abdel Jones of Port St. Lucie, were transported to an unspecified local hospital for treatment for minor images. Neither appears to have spoken to the press about the accident. The financial repurcussions of the crash are not publicly known.

Zugal was able to survive the accident, but not all South Floridians were so lucky last week. Carla Matheson of Windermere, Florida died when a 17-year-old boy crashed into her husband’s vehicle. Matheson was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The teen, Cody Robinson-Banks, has not been charged pending the outcome of an investigation into the crash.

According to news reports, Matheson was the wife of former Pastor Mark Matheson of the First Baptist Church Windermere. Mark Matheson was last reported as undergoing treatment at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was taken for treatment for serious injuries incurred in the accident. The church held honored Mrs. Matheson and prayed for Mr. Matheson at their service this past Sunday. “Lots of prayer, lots of lifting him up, lots of surrounding the kids and whoever [else] needs it,” a friend of Matheson’s told the press following the service.

The fatal accident reportedly occurred on Friday evening on Overstreet Road in Windermere. Mark and Carla Matheson were headed east when Robinson-Banks allegedly veered onto the opposite side of the road for unknown reasons. The Toyota van he was driving struck the Matheson’s Honda head-on. It is not clear how fast the two cars were going at the time.

The impact of the crash apparently caused the Matheson’s vehicle to flip upside down, trapping both persons inside. The couple had to be extracted by emergency medical workers. Miraculously, Robison-Banks and his passenger were not injured in the collision. The name of the passenger was not released to the public.

Friends and family of Mark Matheson remain hopeful that he will recover. “His surgery went well. He’s got broken bones in his leg, he’s got a broken sternum, he’s got a broken lip, a lot of contusions, a lot of cuts and bruises. But it looks like he’s going to survive,” commented one insider.
