19 Year Old Arrested in Coral Springs, Florida for Sexual Assault and Attempted Burglary

A 19-year-old man was arrested in Coral Springs, Florida last night sexual assault and attempted burglary. He is believed to have been booked at the Broward County Jail, where he will await an initial hearing. Neither his nor the victim’s name has yet been released, perhaps because the crime just occurred last night. It is not yet known whether the defendant has a criminal defense attorney. The allegations come in connection to an incident last night where the suspect entered a home in the 2300 block of Northwest 95th Avenue at around 8 p.m. in hopes of committing a robbery, according to authorities. Since the weather was cooler last night, said police, many people had their windows or doors open, which presented an opportunity to would-be burglars. There were no signs of forced entry in the case.

“This is a very quiet neighborhood, where most everybody knows each other,” said Sgt. Dave Kirkland, a Coral Springs Police spokesman. “At this time, we don’t know why this person chose this house.” The house is currently believed to have been targeted at random.

Authorities believe that the defendant entered the home thinking that it was unoccupied at the time, with the sole intentions of committing a robbery. It is not known if he was armed at the time of the break-in. However, the home was not unoccupied: a 25-year-old woman was in the home with her newborn baby at the time of the break-in.

The woman reportedly heard the man enter the home and immediately called police. She was unable to talk, but she knew that if she called, the police should be able to trace the call back to her cell phone. She was right.

“It was an open line and the dispatcher could hear some type of disturbance. Although she wasn’t able to communicate, she kept an open line and that was instrumental, because what that did was that allowed the dispatcher to triangulate at least a close proximity to where the call came from… I really commend her for her quick thinking,” commented Sgt. Kirkland of the phone call.

The woman says that after she called 911, the perpetrator spotted her and sexually assaulted her in front of her child. He then fled the scene. It is not known if he actually stole any property.

Once the man left, the victim immediately called police on her landline to let them know that the suspect was fleeing the scene. The Broward Sheriff’s office and Coral Springs Police, along with other collaborators, closed off the perimeter of the area and dispatched a helicopter. The suspect did not get far before being apprehended by authorities. It is not known if he resisted arrest, or if he had a prior record with the police.

Neither the woman nor her child was seriously harmed, according to reports. The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries resulting from the sexual assault on Sunday night. It is not clear whether she has returned home.
